Welcome to the Community of Ramsey
The approximate 26,587 residents* of Ramsey Minnesota enjoy the perfect mix of suburban life and conveniences, with the rural beauty and recreational spaces of the over 28 square miles of the community.
Located an easy 22-mile commute northwest of Minneapolis and on the southwest corner of Anoka County, the city of Ramsey is bordered by the Mississippi River and Hwy 10 throughway on the south side and the flowing Rum River on its eastern border. You’ll find Sherburne County and the community of Elk River on Ramsey’s western bank, the cities of Anoka and Andover on its eastern borders, the small Burns Township and the little city of Nowthen to its immediate north, and Dayton MN to its south.
Many choose to call Ramsey home because of its variety of homes, businesses, and recreation while maintaining its beautiful wildlife and wetland areas. In fact, there are over 50 miles of trails, 32 parks (municipal and state-maintained), and 17 miles of shoreline. Over 15% of the land is protected wetland and there are approximately 5.6 thousand acres of undeveloped land.
This makes the community a perfect area for active individuals, young families, and those who appreciate the natural outdoors while taking advantage of an urban development well underway through The COR (city of Ramsey’s downtown development).
The Community at Its Core
As of reportable data collected in 2017, the population of the Ramsey community is fairly evenly divided between age groups and sex with women holding 49.7% of the population and men holding 50.3% of the population. Ramsey is one of approximately 50 second-class Charter Cities in the state of Minnesota. As such, Ramsey allows its residents the flexibility and ability to select the kind of government structure they believe best suits its community and is allowable by the law. You can review the most current copy of the city’s current charter here in an outlined published code of ordinances; last updated December 2018 and as of the time of this article (Feb 2019).
Ramsey is a Heart Safe Community. The Heart Safe Community program was championed by a sudden cardiac arrest survivor and the Ramsey City Council and Municipal leaders in the Police and Fire departments. It was developed to train community bystander CPR skills with the use of AED units (automated external defibrillator) through free classes to residents and businesses throughout Ramsey in an effort and mission to create a safer and healthier community.
